DR. SANGCHE LEE

Sangche Lee rejoined the Korea Institute of Finance (KIF) in 2020 after serving his tenure as Senior Deputy Governor and Chief of the Financial Consumer Protection Bureau at the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), the financial supervisory authority in Korea. Since last year, he has also been serving as a member of the ESG Standards Committee as well as the Evaluation & Rating Subcommittee at KCGS, which establishes and revises important codes of best practices for the development of the Korean capital markets, and carries out ESG ratings for Korean companies.


Prior to his work at the FSS, Lee served as a Standing Commissioner and Deputy Chairman for International Affairs at the Financial Services Commission (FSC), the financial regulation authority in Korea. He has also served on a number of government advisory and inquiry boards and commissions, including as Senior Advisor to the Minister of Strategy and Finance and Senior Counselor to the Chairman of the Financial Supervisory Commission, the predecessor to the FSC.


His current research interests include financial consumer protection, ESG evaluation, financial technology and financial inclusion, and global financial regulatory reform.


Lee earned a B.A. in Economics at Seoul National University and a Ph.D. in Economics at Columbia University in the City of New York.
